Gold for Elain at Tiger Bay

Elain - Tiger Bay 2018Elain Owen, a long standing member of Sharks, achieved some impressive results when competing in Cardiff last weekend returning home with two Gold medals.

The sole entrant from Sharks at the annual Tiger Bay Open Meet at the Cardiff International Pool, Elain was up against swimmers from across Wales in what is always a very popular and competitive gala in the swimming calendar.

On the Saturday, Elain, competing in her first event the 200m Breaststroke, swam a personal best time to win the Gold medal. Later that evening she again set another personal best wiping 5seconds off her previous best for the 200m Individual Medley.

The following day, Elain again delivered another impressive swim with a third personal best, this time in the 100m Breaststroke, which was good enough to win her a second Gold medal of the gala.

Sharks Head Coach Alan Webster said: “It’s really tough competing at this level and Elain coped brilliantly with the added pressure that comes with swimming in the international sized 50m pool in Cardiff. She certainly swam to her full potential and achieving personal best times in all three events is all you can ask. She can be very proud indeed of her performance and winning two Gold medals at this gala is a really impressive achievement.”

Awards Galore at Presentation Evening!

Sharks Presentation Evening 2017Welshpool Sharks Swimming Club honoured one of its long-serving volunteers Alison Wilding at its Presentation Evening last night.

Alison was awarded the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ in recognition of her unstinting support to the Club.

Alison’s commitment to the Club extends over 15years or so and she continues to help at weekly coaching sessions.

Club Chair Bronwen Poole said: “The time and effort that Alison continues to give to our Club and the development of our swimmers is remarkable. Without the dedication and commitment of individuals like Alison, we simply couldn’t continue to run as many training sessions as we do and her continued enthusiasm is an inspiration to us all.”

“The work of volunteers often goes unnoticed and taken for granted. This Award seeks to recognize individuals such as Alison who give up a large part of their lives, voluntarily to make things happen. Without Alison and a few others, the Club simply wouldn’t exist and our youngsters wouldn’t have the opportunity to swim competitively.”

During the evening, other awards were presented and amongst the swimmers trophy winners for 2017 was 15yr old James Edwards (Best Performance) for some great all round swims at the Club Gala but notably the 100m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly and 100m Individual Medley.

The Best Newcomer Award went to Summer Wygold whilst Grace Jones who’s developed a great deal whilst with the Club received the Most Improved Award.

The Club also recognized the commitment of its swimmers and this year’s Most Dedicated trophy went to a very well deserved Jamie Marsden-Jones for his dedication at training and commitment to competition showing determination and a positive attitude at all galas.

The Swimmers Swimmer Awards, voted on by the swimmers themselves went to Medi Lewis & Teilo Gittins-Turner.

The age group winners from the Club Gala contested last autumn were Jessica Livermore & Henry Murton-Jones (9yrs); Tanis Davies & Freddie Murton-Jones jointly with Teilo Gittins-Turner (10/11); Medi Lewis & Finlay Jones (12/13); Rebecca Edwards & Mitchel Hunt (14/15) and Ellen Jones & Billy Hunt (16yrs+).

The evening finished with a buffet and disco. The Club extends its appreciation in particular to its Secretary Ann Jones for compering the evening and to Shirley Owen for arranging the presentations and awards.

Poolside Parent Rota – The Club Needs You!

To ensure that the swimming sessions are as effective as they can be for all the swimmers the Coaches need some support. Having parents on poolside to remind the swimmers of what they should be doing, ensure they are focussed, help count or keep an eye on the clock are all things any of us can do without the need for formal training. There are plenty of Swimmers and so there must be plenty of Parents or Guardians! If we all do a bit then it should not be a burden, having been poolside on Wednesday I now understand a lot more  about the art of Swimming!

Please get involved, there are different rota’s for the different sessions.

All you need is light clothes, a drink and some enthusiasm!                   help-clipart-cliparti1_help-clip-art_06
