A couple of our Sharks swam with past and current Olympians last weekend when Carwyn & Deiniol Owen took part in the Swim Britain relay event at the Cardiff International Pool. They’d entered as a ‘family’ team along with their dad and cousin Megan from Pembrokeshire. When they arrived on pool-side they were greeted by Duncan Goodhew who chatted with them and showed them his Gold Medal which he won in the 100m breaststroke at the Moscow Olympic Games. Also there to speak to were Paralympians Sam Hynd and Gemma Almond along with rising British star Jack Thomas. The race itself consisted of each swimmer doing a leg of 250m four times in a relay format. Unlike a normal relay though, this wasn’t swam in lanes but in an open-water style course swimming up and down the 50m pool gradually zigzagging across it by turning around buoys rather than tumbling at each end. It was noticeably much harder work turning and navigating the buoys like this! Once you completed your 250m you climbed out, tagged a team mate and when each team member had done their leg, you re-entered the pool to do it again, four times each. Carwyn led the team off and found himself lined up against rising star Jack Thomas! Deiniol, swimming the 3rdleg had Duncan Goodhew to contend with but who very sportingly swam some 100m alongside Deiniol on one of their legs. The fastest team finished in around 33minutes with the ‘Owen’ team completing the 4000m relay course in 1hr 12minutes and were the fastest‘family’ team of the day. A really good day out and Carwyn & Deiniol really enjoyed sitting on pool-side speaking and swimming with some of our past and current swimming stars.
Congratulations to the Diddy League team who yesterday came 4th in the Division, which hopefully will mean we’re will be moving up to Division 1.
Here’s a few pictures from the day.
