East Clwyd League – Final Round

IMG_20160618_125723Last Saturday was our sixth and final trip to Holywell for the third round in the Junior Competition of the East Clwyd League.

It was another great outing for our swimmers where once again they did themselves and the Club proud.

Well done to everyone who’s taken part in this year’s rounds.

This Saturday it was our turn to host the gala and great to see parents stepping forward to help with the many tasks that go hand-in-hand with running these events. Special mention must go to the following individuals – Isabella Jones & Janet Gittins who organized the door & raffle; Bronwen Poole & Rachel Smith for officiating; Paula Edwards along with Head Coach Peter Swanton for supervising our swimmers poolside and Rhian Owen who helped run the meet software & record results.

As in previous rounds it was once again a very close run thing between ourselves and Wrexham who just pipped us to the post:

1st Wrexham – 182½ points / 2nd Welshpool – 178½ points / 3rd Connahs Quay – 146 points / 4th Flint – 141 points / 5th Buckley – 106 points / 6th Mold – No team

A great result though for our Head Coach Peter Swanton and our swimmers. With no 11yr old girls available to swim this weekend, our younger swimmers did brilliantly to swim up an age group.

Congratulations to Wrexham who retain the Junior Trophy for 2016 as well as having won the Senior Trophy earlier this year. As for Sharks, we finished in second place in both the Senior and Junior rounds which is a great achievement.

Well done everyone on what has been a great performance across all rounds for both our Senior & Junior teams.

Cath Ankers 2016

13413496_1057031104333029_5901707511779549790_nThe weekend saw a big turn out of Sharks with some 25 swimmers competing at the annual Cath Ankers Meet at Wrexham’s Water World.

The day long gala saw lots of great performances, competitive racing and personal bests were achieved by everyone.

Head Coach Peter Swanton said: “We saw some fantastic swimming. The day had it all, some great gutsy swims, lots of very good streamlining with our swimmers finishing hard and many winning their races in the last few metres. It was also really good to see the work they’ve been putting in on their breaststroke underwater phase making a real difference.”

Well done everyone!

Club Gala 2016

IMG_20160612_110041Entry is now open to this years (closed) Club Gala set to take place over two evenings on the 21st & 28th September 2016.

Entry form attached below.

It’s a few months away but the school summer holidays will soon be with us and as there’s a lot to organise we hope we can get most entries returned by the end of the school term to start sorting out heats & timeline.

Two changes this year as follows:

  • Members who are ‘ranked’ members with another Club are limited to three events.
  • Race distances match those promoted by Swim Wales for development meets and should help boost our swimmers confidence over longer distances.

The longer distances may put a bit of pressure on us to get through it all in the available time but if we start promptly and have sufficient help on the nights we should be fine.

Entry fee remains at £1 per event.

Medals and awards will be presented at our Club Presentation Evening on Saturday 22nd October 2016.

Any questions just ask, otherwise the early return of entries & payment would be really helpful.

Entry Form – Club Gala 2016

thThe Club has arranged for a nutritionist to come and speak to our swimmers and parents. The aim is to cover nutrition & diet in general but also to explain how good nutrition can help you prepare for training as well as how to recover from training as well as maintaining energy levels in competition.

The event will take place on Sunday 18th September 2016 starting at 1:30pm through until 3:30pm at the Welshpool Scout Hut and is free of charge.

Ideally, to get the most from this event, swimmers should be accompanied by a parent as it is us who buy, prepare & cook their food! Parents are welcome to attend on their own as we appreciate a presentation of this kind might not be of huge interest to our youngest swimmers.

We do need an indication of likely attendance so please do let us know if you’re coming in the weeks ahead.

Our pool based training session will continue as normal on that day from 4pm through until 5pm.

Training Update

thPlease note there’ll be no training this coming Sunday 12 June due to a clash with the Cath Ankers gala the same day.

Also, no training on the following Sunday 19 June as coaches are away all day the day before at the ECL Junior gala.

Finally, due to a clash with the Wolverhampton Open Meet training has also been cancelled on Sunday 17th July.

Sports Leaders Course

thNewtown Swimming Club is offering a Sports Leaders Course at Maldwyn Leisure Centre on Sunday 26th June 2016 from 9.30am to 4.30pm and has opened it up to Shark’s swimmers & parents too.

This course is the first step into coaching and aims to give candidates an insight into interacting with swimmers and assisting the qualified coaches on poolside. It is open to adults who may be interested in joining the coaching team, as well as our older club swimmers.

Candidates must be at least 14yrs of age to attend. Over 16’s will be required to undertake a DBS check if they want to then help out regularly on poolside (we arrange this through Swim Wales).

The course is free of charge to participants. Numbers are limited and places must be booked in advance. If the course is oversubscribed we will prioritise places for those willing and able to make a regular commitment to volunteer poolside.

If you would like to book a place, let us know as soon as possible but no later than Friday 10th June 2016.
