Cardiff International Meet

Dyfrig Jones was our only representative at this year’s Cardiff International Meet that took place this bank holiday weekend.

It’s a great pool to swim in and a great gala to compete at and Dyfrig thoroughly enjoyed his experience of swimming long course in a 50m pool.

13310629_1049035461799260_7445334939544129557_nHe swam well in the 100m Backstroke just missing out on a personal best but in the 50m Backstroke he took a massive 2½ seconds off his time. More importantly than the personal best perhaps was that he put into practice what he’d learnt in training –underwater phases is the key – as he was the last to surface after the start and in the lead!

Just goes to show, good underwater skills along with starts and finishes win races! Well done Dyfrig!

Training Update

bhThere’s a Bank Holiday coming up this Monday (30th May) and the Flash is closing early so there’ll be no training that evening.
Please also remember that due to a clash with a gala there won’t be any training on Sunday 12th June 2016 either.

Aquathlon Success

Sunday saw Sharks taking part in a third aquathlon event of the year delivering more great results against very strong competition.

It wasn’t the best of days for an aquathlon with the day starting off dry but heavy rain soon moved in and the transition area was moved indoors half-way through the event. Despite the weather, it was nevertheless a very competitive event with typically 30 entrants in each age group with Sharks performing really strongly.

In the TriStart Category (8yrs) Poppy Livermore took 1st place13226882_10154139073906000_2896876046069010386_n pretty much leading from the start with a great swim putting her amongst some of the fastest in her event followed by a very quick transition which gave her a really healthy lead before putting in the fastest run in her age group and improving her time from the Shrewsbury event a few weeks ago by nearly 30seconds.

13250498_10153572771901630_468397303_nFreddie Murton-Jones (9/10yrs)was competing in his first event of the year and put in a really good performance finishing 8th in what was a very competitive race with just 14seconds between himself and a possible podium place.

13254265_10154139075321000_3864537389210148358_nAmelia Livermore & Deiniol Owen raced the T2 category (11/12yrs) with over 40 athletes taking part.

Amelia finished 12th in the girls event with a huge personal best knocking over a minute off the time she achieved at Shrewsbury.

13249440_10153572856411630_1609299648_nIn the boys, Deiniol finished 7th putting in a good swim but a ‘hiccup’ at transition and having to hold up his race number belt during the run hindered him hugely and put a stop to any thoughts of a podium finish. A lesson learnt though – always check your kit, make sure it’s your race belt and not your dads!

13278049_10153572856781630_1889699292_nThe day finished nicely for Sharks in the boys T3 category (13/14yrs) with Carwyn Owen winning a very competitive race. Coming out of the pool in fourth place he had a bit of chasing to do but put in a really strong run to win the event by just 6seconds with just 10seconds separating the top 5 places.

A great day of racing, good performances all round and whilst not the best of weather conditions it was a very competitive event across all age groups and great to see Sharks doing so well.

Results – Junior Development Meet 2016

13254345_1041942775841862_9114264761879276365_nA very warm weekend at Llandudno where we witnessed some pretty hot swimming too!

It was a quiet first day yesterday at the Swim Wales North Junior Development Meet with just Freddie Murton-Jones, Jack Lewis & Deiniol Owen making the journey north but between them they smashed a few personal bests with Freddie & Jack (10yrs) doing amazingly well in their first ever competitive 200m Freestyle.

Today was a lot busier with 11 Sharks taking part and some good swims all round and a few more big personal bests too.

It was great to see Leighton Blagg & Teilo Gittins-Turner competing in their first Swim Wales gala and handling the pressure like seasoned pros!

The girls weren’t to be outdone though with regular gala competitors Elain Owen & Megan Smith chipping away at some of their personal bests. It was great to see Ela Owen, Grace Jones & Lois Birchall competing again and they too were rewarded with some personal bests.

Dyfrig Jones (11yrs) missed the first day but made up for that absence today with a 2nd place in the 100Fly & 3rd in the 200IM.

IMG_20160515_153055The day ended on a high 13254697_1041943125841827_943041175901730634_ofor Sharks with Deiniol winning the boys 12yrs Pentathlon Award whilst Jack earned himself a Pentathlon Medal for his final placing in the 10yrs age group.

It was all rounded off a few minutes later by our boys 10yrs Medley Relay team (Teilo / Leighton / Jack / Freddie) who contributed to a hugely exciting race where they fought back to clinch Gold in the closing stages of the race. Just goes to show, NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!

Well done everyone, a great two days.

Darwins Challenge Aquathlon 2016

A few intrepid Sharks challenged themselves to something a bit different this weekend by competing in the Darwins Challenge Aquathlon at Shrewsbury.

13139130_10154092004801000_348719883888051339_nThe event consisted of a swim followed by run and the winner was determined by whoever managed to do the combined disciplines the fastest including the transition.

Whilst the day started off sunny and bright, by midday it was cold & damp but our 7 Sharks met the challenging conditions without complaint.

First off was Carwyn Owen competing in the Tri 3 (13-14yrs) boys age group – 300m Swim & 2400m run – coming home 1st in a time of 15:01.

Next up were Amelia Livermore, Phoebe Carter and Deiniol Owen all competing in the Tri 2 (11-12yrs) age groups – 200m/1800m – where Deiniol finished 1st in the boys group in a time of 11:24 whilst Phoebe & Amelia finished 3rd and 4th in the girls in times of 13:18 and 13:36 respectively. 13083178_10154745421967646_5616804128620088431_n

Finally, Poppy Livermore, Jessica Livermore & Teifi Owen competed in the last couple of races of the day in the Tri Start (8yrs) category – 50m/600m. Teifi clinched 1st in the boys in a time of 4:30 whilst Jessica & Poppy raced in different heats but finished within just 1second of each other with Poppy 2nd in 4:54 and Jessica 3rd in 4:55.

The day saw some really competitive and exciting races and all our Sharks put in some fast swims and followed the time in the pool with some very strong running as well.

Well done all of you.
